How To Stay Motivated To Lose Weight
Any type of unpleasing work can become difficult to continue doing after a while. If you don't enjoy the process, it's going to be very difficult to keep going.
Losing weight can be one of those unpleasing efforts that you just don't feel like doing after a certain amount of time.
You might start off with a goal in mind or a peak of motivation kicking in once you're no longer able to fit in those jeans or do some things you were once able to do.
But the reality is that it doesn't matter what you felt in the beginning if you give up after it becomes too difficult.
So it's absolutely crucial you find a system of doing things which will help you to have an easier time achieving your goals.
So let's look at some tips on how you can do that...
1. Write down your goals
If fitting into a pair of jeans or being able to play better with your kids got you motivated to lose weight, then write those goals down and remind yourself of them every day.
Maybe some of the reasons include preventing coronary disease, being able to do the things you were once able to or looking good for an important event.
Whatever it may be, you absolutely have to be reminded of it on a daily basis. And just keeping it in your head won't do.
So write the major goal down and stay motivated by reading white you wrote every day.
2. Make a plan for after success
Before you even start losing weight, it's good to have a plan of how you're going to maintain the weight that you lost once you finally lose all of it.
That way you'll want to get to that place where you can use that plan, so that realization keeps you going till the very end.
But it's not the end at all. You've just reached the point where you can start implementing that plan you set out from the get-go.
There was definitely a time in your adult life when you felt good about your weight. And during that time you wore a certain dress or pants size.
So go out, buy a piece of clothing that size and hang it up somewhere. It will stare at your face every time you glance at it and it won't let you stop until you can fit in it.
This type of motivation is extremely powerful!
4. Lose weight fast
Science proved that if you lose a large amount of weight in the beginning, there's a bigger chance that you'll lose more weight in the long term.
That's why it's good to find a way to lose weight as quickly as possible during the beginning stages.
I recommend the Ketogenic Diet.
You can read about it here.
Basically, you cut out carbs and stick to a high-fat diet, which is, to me, the most delicious diet you can be on.
5. Focus on doing, not achieving
This is something very similar to setting small goals instead of large ones.
The thing about this mindset is to stop thinking about what you want to achieve in the long run, as your end goal, but focusing on what you have to do on a regular basis to get to that point.
So instead of thinking about how you want to lose 30lbs and constantly having that in mind, you can shift your primary focus on what the process includes to get there.
So you could make an eating plan and an exercise plan and try achieving those goals every day and week which won't feel so overwhelming as opposed to having just one big goal which can start feeling too far away and like too big of a mountain to climb.
6. Get a weight-loss pal
It's always easier to achieve any type of goal if you have somebody to support you.
So if there is someone who you're close with and maybe who's also willing to lose some weight you can arrange a special type of supportive relationship which will help you both to get to a place where you want to be.
The main point here is to build trust, so it's best for this person to be someone who you already know and have a good close relationship with. But it can also be a fitness coach or some other professional with whom you're going to exchange your numbers and regularly keep in touch.
So your fitness pal can help motivate you when you don't feel like going to the gym or when you're experiencing a different type of negative emotions.
7. Set small goals and reward yourself!
First, set a goal. Make it small. For instance, lose 5 lbs. And then achieve it. And then reward yourself for achieving it.
Pretty simple right? But it's extremely powerful.
It's unbelievably more achievable when you set small goals for yourself instead of constantly keeping big goals in your mind.
So what can your reward be? Well, basically anything you can think of.
Buy something for yourself (piece of clothing, a fitness tracker or a pair of new wireless earphones), make yourself a bubble bath or go out and do something fun like go to a movie or have a night out with your friends.
With time, you'll be able to set bigger goals with, of course, bigger rewards!
8. Get competitive!
If you have a group of friend or coworkers who are interested in losing weight, you can organize a friendly competition with them.
When you have a desire to be the best within a group of people that gives you a psychological boost and you become extremely motivated with no effort.
So because this is a process that can last for some time, you will definitely stick to it as you wouldn't want to be the one who gives up, but the one who wins!
You can also bet on yourself!
9. Earn money by losing weight!
Speaking of betting on yourself, there are services like HealthyWage which will let you deposit a certain amount of money which you will lose if you don't lose the weight you set out to lose.
The signup is free and you can even make money by doing this.
So you either lose weight and earn money or stay overweight and lose money, the choice is up to you!
10. Set an ideal picture
Are you planning a trip to a sunny beach on the Mediterranian? Well, you might want to look your best for that time.
Why don't you collect some photos of your dream vacation spot and have 'em hung somewhere where they'll remind you of what you want to achieve.
And if you set a date for your vacation it will give you an even more narrow window for achieving your goals, which can get you there in right in the time for sunny relaxation with a delicious drink in your hand.
11. Keep track of your success
If you keep a log of the food you eat, it's going to be much harder for you to accidentally eat too many calories.
Also, because weight loss doesn't always have to be steady and linear during the week, it can help to see your weight loss graph going consistently down over time.
There are lots of great apps for this. Here's a list of some:
With these apps you can track everything, from food and calorie intake, creating your meal plans with enormous food databases to keeping statistics, graphs, pie charts and having every piece of information available at any time.
It's really beneficial having statistics connecting your calorie and macros intake with the amount of weight you're losing.
You can also track your progress regarding exercise, strength, and stamina which also keeps you motivated to keep going towards your goal.
12. Join a workout class
If you're with a bunch of new people trying to achieve the same thing, you'll soon be forming new and strong friendships.
And those friendships are going to be an awesome new support system to help you get to where you want to be.
Having new friends to do this with keeps it interesting where you're building new bonds with new people and expanding your friend circle.
